Where an addition is placed on a house will vary depending on the layout of the home and actual site conditions. If there is space on the site that allows for a family room addition on the main level of a home, I often look for a location near the kitchen. If there is no space on the site for a ground level addition, we'll either look at a location such as in an unfinished basement, or consider adding onto a second story. One recent trend we are finding is locating a family space adjacent to bedrooms, especially if the space is located adjacent to kid's bedrooms. This family room space often becomes the kid's 'hang out space'.
The family room is a multifunctional room that provides space for the family to lounge in front of the TV, or a place where you can hide and read a great novel, a spot where your children can make a mess with their toys while you entertain company in other areas of the house, where adults can play poker, ping, pong, darts, pool, and other games, and the best place to have a party so other areas of your home don't get dirty or cluttered with trash and people.
Choose one central theme for the room. Does your family love watching movies or listening to music? Design the room in a way that resembles a theatre or music room. Arrange the sofa and a couple of club chairs closely around the coffee table in a way that all of the furnishings face a big screen television. You might also divide the room into sections; a corner with chair, ottoman and floor lamp for the avid reader, another section for the gamers in the family. If your family enjoys playing pool, ping pong or foosball, why not leave 1/2 of the space open as a game room? This works especially well if you have a very large family room.
